JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Community Service Federal Work-Study Program (CSFWS) and Penn State Sustainability are seeking applicants for the EnvironMentors Program to begin immediately. As an EnvironMentors intern, you will play a crucial role in supporting Penn State Sustainability’s mentoring program, which works with historical underrepresented youth in environmental science and STEM research. This student will assist Penn State Sustainability’s efforts to advance educational excellence and environmental STEM achievement for underrepresented youth through the EnvironMentors Program.

The EnvironMentors Program partners faculty and post-doctoral researchers with undergraduate students who mentor high school students from historically underrepresented underprivileged populations. Research teams works on environmental STEM research projects and deliver the results in research fairs and other venues.

The ideal candidate will have excellent written, interpersonal, and oral communication skills and ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds. Additionally, the perfect candidate will exhibit a deep interest and knowledge in environmental justice, sustainability, and the science and ethics of climate change.

Qualifications:

· Possess an ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.

· Detail-oriented and organized, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

· Demonstrated integrity and a commitment to serving as a positive role model for youth.

· Interest in STEM education, environmental issues and/or environmental justice and a passion for supporting underrepresented youth.

· A GPA above 3.0, and superb written, interpersonal, and oral communication skills.

· Be a quick learner, able to manage and organize multiple contacts and work with shifting schedules.

· Maintain a log of goals, activities, and objectives.

Duties may include but are not limited to:

  1. Support Mentoring Program: Assist with various aspects of the mentoring program, including communication with mentors, mentees, and their families. Serve as a point of contact for inquiries. Assist with planning and coordination of events. Ensure program is always within compliance while working with minors. Assist with mentor-mentee matching process. Accompany the EnvironMentors coordinator on field trips; and tasks as requested.

  2. Collect and Store Confidential Files: Ensure the confidentiality and security of program-related documents, including mentor and mentee applications, background checks, and other sensitive information. Maintain organized records of all program participants.

  3. Assist with Mentee and Mentor Clearance Applications: Help potential mentees and mentors’ complete clearance applications and ensure all necessary documentation is submitted in a timely manner. Follow up with mentors to ensure compliance with program requirements.

  4. Correspondence: Communicate regularly with potential recruits, mentors, mentees, and their families via email, phone, and in-person meetings. Provide updates, reminders, and support as needed to ensure the success of the mentoring relationships.

  5. Promote Diversity and Inclusion: Work to promote diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging within the EnvironMentors program. Support the recruitment of mentors and mentees from diverse backgrounds and ensure all participants have a sense of belonging, feel welcome and valued.

Additional Information:

This position offers flexible hours (approximately 5-10 hours per week) from June to August 2024 and up to 15 hours per week during the semester. This position may require occasional evening or weekend hours to accommodate program activities and events.

Positions with CSFWS require the acquisition of the Three-Public Clearances for Employment.

This job requires the following 3 publicly available clearances:

• PA State Police Criminal Background Check• PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form• FBI Criminal Background Check.
