Job Responsibilities:

The Senior P2 Engineer will primarily support the industrial/manufacturing programs of the NYSP2I; this entails providing hands-on P2 technical assistance to industry in a variety of sectors. The Senior P2 Engineer will use their technical expertise and industry experience to assess manufacturing processes to identify areas of improvement with regard to energy use, water use, hazardous and non-hazardous waste reduction and other environmental impacts. This work will entail performing material and energy balances to identify baseline metrics, researching and identifying environmentally preferable and cost-effective alternatives, such as material substitution, process modification and adoption of new technology. This role will require staying abreast of current and emerging P2 challenges as well as the potential solutions to address those challenges.

The Senior P2 Engineer will manage multiple, concurrent projects as well as mentor junior staff or students on the project teams.

The Senior P2 Engineer will scope projects and develop project proposals, and will write final technical reports, trade articles and case studies. The Senior P2 Engineer will present project results to clients at all levels of the organization as well as develop and present P2 training and best practices workshops to stakeholders. The Senior P2 Engineer will also be responsible for assisting the team in searching for, applying to, and writing federal, state and other relevant grant proposals. Therefore, excellent communication, writing and presentation skills are a requirement for this position. The Senior P2 Engineer will perform other tasks in support of the Institute as requested by the director, which may include development of P2 assessment tools and conducting research in specific focus areas.

The major responsibilities of this position are:

  • Screen companies for P2 opportunities, develop project proposals, and manage client relations

  • Provide technical assistance/conduct applied research and manage projects including:

  • Provide hands-on direct assistance to industry in a variety of sectors, including assessing manufacturing processes to identify areas of improvement, collecting data on-site and performing material and energy balances to identify baseline metrics, researching and identifying environmentally preferable and cost-effective alternatives, and assisting companies in meeting certifications/scorecards or other sustainability goals.

  • Conduct secondary research on new technologies and approaches to identify P2 solutions for clients.

  • Conduct experiments to assess the validity, efficacy and feasibility of potential solutions for client-specific applications.

  • Conduct applied research for special projects to advance pollution prevention in NYS.

  • Plan projects primarily for manufacturing client P2 assessment, feasibility and implementation projects and develop scopes of work along with project budget, timeline, resource planning and risk assessment/mitigation plan.

  • Execute projects, including sourcing/scheduling necessary materials, supplies and equipment, conducting research, leading and motivating the project team and managing the client relationship.

  • Monitor and control the projects so they are completed on time, within budget and meet stated goals.

  • Use project management tools as appropriate and identify new tools and approaches for continuous improvement.

  • Write technical project reports and program progress reports and collect and report metrics.

  • Prepare content and deliver workshops and professional training.

  • Write case studies, articles, and other materials.

  • Other tasks as needed (i.e. grant proposal development)

Required Qualifications:

Education:

An advanced degree or equivalent experience in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Energy Engineering, Environmental Engineering or related technical or scientific field.

Required experience:

  • Minimum of 8 years of related work experience, with experience in manufacturing process improvement/efficiency.

  • Project management experience including budget and time management

  • Experience leading a team, professional mentoring and/or managing staff

  • Solid understanding of source reduction/pollution prevention technologies/approaches, green technology and engineering

  • Experience in a manufacturing environment

  • Experience writing technical reports

  • Ability to solve complex problems

  • Team player with good interpersonal skills

  • Strong presentation skills

  • Very strong oral and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience or working knowledge in the following areas preferred:

  • Green chemistry/alternative materials

  • Design for the environment

  • Systems analysis

  • Environmental/P2 assessments and technical assistance

The following experience is also preferred:

  • Developing and delivering training

  • Use of Quality, Lean, Six Sigma (or equivalent) tools

  • Writing grant/research proposals to federal and/or state sponsors

  • Writing detailed final technical reports for industrial clients

Job Summary:

The NYS Pollution Prevention Institute (NYS P2I) is seeking a Senior Pollution Prevention (P2) Engineer. The Senior Pollution Prevention Engineer will contribute to all aspects of the NYSP2I program and will be primarily responsible for providing P2 technical assistance to industry and other identified sectors, working with manufacturers throughout the supply chain, conducting research, and facilitating technology transfer of P2 technologies through workshops & outreach efforts.
