Microsoft’s Azure Data engineering team is leading the transformation of analytics in the world of data with products like databases, data integration, big data analytics, messaging & real-time analytics, and business intelligence. The products our portfolio include Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL DB, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Power BI. ​​Within Azure Data, the messaging and real-time analytics team provides comprehensive solutions and a robust platform that enables users to ingest high granularity signals (real-time & observability) and complex data, converting those into a advantage in real-time for both end users and modern applications.  ​

​​We're in search of a Principal Software Engineer to take on projects and lead enhancements to the core technology driving stream processing. We're looking for a hands-on developer with expertise in many aspects of high throughput and multi-tenant services, ability to design components carefully, properly handle errors, write clean and well-factored code with good tests and good maintainability.

In this role, you'll have the autonomy to make strategic decisions that shape our product direction and drive significant improvements. Our goal is to simplify the use of real-time analytics at any scale and seamlessly integrate them into end-to-end analytics pipelines, allowing our customers to focus on their business logic without worrying about managing the underlying compute infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Design, code, test, and deploy features for our high throughput multi-tenant real-time streaming service.

  • Act as a technical leader, guiding the team through complex problems with your expertise.

  • Breaks down long-term project vision into milestones as part of an overall roadmap.

  • Review and contribute to the specifications and implementations written by other team members.

  • Proactively seeks new information and adjust to new trends, technical solutions, and patterns that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance while also driving monitoring improvements and operations at scale.​

Qualifications

Required /Minimum Qualifications

  • ​​Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 3+ years of experience developing high scale, distributed systems on a cloud platform.

  • 3+ years of mentoring and coaching other software engineers.​

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:

  • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications

  • ​​Demonstrated experience in working with cloud, big data, machine learning, data science, and large-scale distributed systems.

  • Familiarity and/or experience with real time data streaming technologies and tools like Azure Stream Analytics, Kafka, Flink and others.

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
