Position overview:

The Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL) directorate of SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is a national user facility providing synchrotron radiation for research in biology, chemistry, engineering, environmental science, material science, medicine, and physics. SSRL operates and maintains the 3GeV electron storage ring SPEAR3, the associated injector facility, and synchrotron radiation beam lines on SPEAR3. The SSRL Beam Line Systems (BLS) division designs, constructs, and commissions new synchrotron radiation beam lines and retrofits existing beam lines for new capabilities or improved performance.

The SSRL Beam Line Systems (BLS) division works with scientists and other engineers in the design of synchrotron radiation instrumentation and optics. Components of x-ray beam lines range in complexity from simple mechanical supports to intricate optical assemblies providing precise manipulation of optical elements subject to high thermal loads in ultra-high vacuum.

Your specific responsibilities include:

  • Component conceptualization, analysis, development of 3D models, materials selection, determination/application of appropriate standards, tolerancing, detailing, vendor interfacing, procurement, and documentation preparation in compliance with SSRL standards.

  • Manage the engineering process from conception through design, construction, and field installation. This includes interfacing with both physicists and scientists to develop project requirements and mechanical technicians to ensure proper component assembly and installation.

  • Design reports, design reviews, cost estimates, schedules, system documentation and test reports for individual projects will be the responsibility of this engineer.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in mechanical engineering or mechanical design and moderate (2 or more years) design experience using CAD systems.

  • Good working knowledge of mechanical fabrication practices, precision design, kinematic design principles, and ANSI drafting standards.

  • Experience using parametric CAD software and the Windows computing environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize designs and strong analytical and problem solving skills combined with creative and innovative thinking.

  • Understanding of the fundamentals of heat transfer, thermal stress analysis, and structural analysis. Familiar with Finite Element Analysis.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, especially when interfacing with physicists, scientists, engineers and technicians.

Desired Qualifications:

  • A Master’s or PhD degree or equivalent in mechanical engineering and experience (2 or more years) using Solid Edge or equivalent.

  • Ability to set up and use Finite Element Analysis software to solve heat transfer and structural analysis problems when needed.

  • Good working knowledge of precision mechanism design, and vacuum compatible design practices.

  • Familiarity with optical systems and optical components including monochromators, mirrors, slits, collimators, etc…

  • Working knowledge of design principles for ultra-high vacuum systems.

  • Familiarity with coordinate measuring machines, faro arms, calipers and dial indicators.

SLAC Employee Competencies:

  • Effective Decisions: Uses job knowledge and solid judgment to make quality decisions in a timely manner.

  • Self-Development: Pursues a variety of venues and opportunities to continue learning and developing.

  • Dependability: Can be counted on to deliver results with a sense of personal responsibility for expected outcomes.
